COMMUNITY ART CREATIVE

PROJECT

China is at once experiencing rapid urbanization while undergoing the neglect of urban leftover spaces under non-privatized land property policies. The Community Art Creative Project (CACP), based in the No.2 Yulin Alley neighborhood, is a project rooted in this context, focusing on informal urban space study and renewal practice. Working as interdisciplinary team, it delves into urban and local community dynamics and the multiple facets of the Alley through plural practice such as design, sociology, and art, engaging professionals, communities, residents, municipal government, and student volunteers. By deciphering and restructuring the hidden social and spatial orders, relationships, and operational logics, and facilitated by spatial practices, it explores a new mechanism of participation and the possibilities of co-creating and reshaping urban living spaces and rights.

The light steel structure that is easy to recycle and assemble allows all residents and volunteers to easily build the space. The CACP construction team of 30 people completed the assembly of the main steel structure of the space in 5 days. On the night of completion, the construction team and neighbors celebrated and had hot pot in the space. When the space was just a steel frame structure, residents and community workers already held neighborhood governance discussions here.

On the 60m long site of the original carport, we used 2/3 as space, leaving 1/3 for plant growth. The planting roof between the building and the residential building can also accommodate the growth of plants. During 2023, we discovered through the practice of neighborhood plant observation that plants, as a soft force, can naturally and easily connect local residents. In 2024, we plan to work with residents to jointly manage and create neighborhood gardens, which can not only serve as a natural landscape for the community, but also Create deeper relationships with local residents and invite resources related to nature, plants, and education into the community.

Under the guise of being a horticulture student, Nai You embarked on a journey of observing people and plants. While sorting through the fragmented and disordered photos, she discovered that people's desires and plants have always been intertwined with each other. They silently serve as the background of life, not only recording the subtle social scale between people, but also recording that in the process of rapid urban expansion and transformation, the vague land that has been reduced to urban wilderness still exists. What spontaneity and serendipity. By exploring the entangled relationship between humans and plants, we can gain a subtle and ambiguous perspective and gain a glimpse of part of the ecological logic behind the multiple spaces in the city. And often, a society's attitude towards nature is also a reflection of its treatment of itself.

When we walk into a place, we will intuitively see Some people, things, things. occurs in these tables Under the image, everything deeper, abstract and macroscopic has never been seen. And those invisible forces shape the seen reality. Our perspective is also shaped by ourselves and the outside world - identity, experience, interests, education, and the ever-changing society. It filters out the reality we can see and also divides the blind spots outside our field of vision.

We try to enter ErXiang from a sociological perspective, and go deeper layer by layer through the interfaces between people and things that lead to urban life, to understand the phenomena, issues, theories and paths that we may turn a blind eye to. By understanding the urban space and social ecology we live in, we can understand the city’s operating model and reality. Phase, in order to intervene more effectively, change the city, and change ourselves.

In the process of observing and recording the daily objects in the alley, our sense of boundaries is constantly being adjusted, and we are constantly experiencing this neighborly relationship that cannot be escaped and must be faced. Every time I pick up the camera, I vaguely feel that this kind of unauthorized recording and inquiry is inappropriate, but these photographed items exist calmly in the "public view that everyone can enter", as if they don't care who is watching them. and records. Objects on the street are not always placed here unchanged. The "my family" dining table at noon may become "everyone's" mahjong table in the afternoon, just like the second alley. "My family's" and "everyone's" are not a fixed state. It contains many uncertain scenarios and diverse paths. These ambiguous spaces in the Second Alley are defined by the objects that exist here, and through these objects, the people in the Second Alley have formed a complex and tacit agreement on the use of these spaces. We see that these ordinary, everyday objects are humorous, roundabout, or straightforward, expressing how people living here get along with each other.

The plan to use knitting to display Yulin Erxiang came from our group’s discussions a long time ago. We wanted to use materials with temperature to display the most representative Erxiang satellite pattern possible. Knitting, also known as the art of thread, is a clothing making method with the attribute of connecting threads. It is also a very subjective way to express sustainability in the current environment. We hope that through our daily knitting, we can break down some formal barriers. It allows the ladies who support us to feel some closeness.

During the continuous improvement of space renovation, various temporary tools and materials will appear on the construction site, which can be used as temporary exhibition props or furniture. Based on the design principles of simple craftsmanship, multi-functional use, and cheap and easily available materials, the CACP team made full use of waste materials on site and in the neighborhood to transform and design new furniture.

These furnitures come from Yulin Erxiang area and surrounding residents. Some are broken furniture dug out from home by the aunties chatting on the street in Erxiang, some are idle furniture cleared from the courtyard, and some are furniture donated by neighbors out of friendship. These pieces of furniture with traces of time and personal memories have become an emotional link between the former owner and the space. Furniture renovation designers are intermediary translators who will use the transformed furniture to give back to future users of the community living room.

About the Space: Desig-ing

The space is located in the backyard of the No.19 residential compound of Yulin East Street which was once a row of dilapidated and almost unused storage rooms. In collaboration with the local community and the residents of the compound, we rebuild the space in situ at the end of 2022. We do not wish the space to appear in the neighbourhood overnight, but rather, we hope to build it together with the community as we continue to create connections with people – hence the name “Design-ing”. The process of constructing the space was itself a practice of co-creation. In early 2023, under the guidance of professional light-steel structural engineers from Design For People Architecture Studio, we worked with residents, CACP action team members, and community staff to complete the main structure. As of today, the space continues to be designed and refined.

About the Exhibition: 11 Names TBC

Taking No.2 Yulin Alley as a research object, we propose an analytical framework of “The Multi-layered Alley”, in which working groups of different disciplines intervened with different perspectives to observe and study the multiple facets of the Alley, and finally form a set of mapping to be displayed in the space. In this sense, the alley is the database and the space is the workstation. Four maps – Objects on the Boundary, The Seen and the Unseen, Function/Fashion Files 1.0, and The Untold Stories of Plants – will take audiences on a journey into the different dimensions of the Alley.

In addition, we also organised two series of workshops on old furniture: repair!remodel!restore! and sew!sew!sew!. Some of the old furniture, donated by residents and renovated by workshop volunteers, is placed in the "community living room" at the entrance of the space and shared with the public. We are using the furniture to improve the functionality of the space and to try to connect with more people at the same time.

There are eleven names for the exhibition and no final version has been determined; just as with the CACP and what we are doing itself cannot be fully determined. We would like to take this opportunity to present a true picture of all the progress we have made so far, including all the questions, chaos, thinking, actions, compromises, and ideals. Perhaps this is what CACP is all about - provoking thought and opening dialogue.
